 Learn more about the craft of acting at ASF’s Acting Academy.

Fall Academy classes are open to new and returning students.

NOTE: Some classes meet Mondays; others meet Saturdays. Please note your class days when registering.

Fall Day of Play

Grades K – 2 (ages 5 – 8 ONLY)
Saturday, October 5, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Fee: $25

Get ready to ACTivate your curiosity and imagination with a whole day dedicated to creative play! Our youngest rising stars will have fun releasing their wiggles, bringing a short storybook to life from page to stage, and channeling their inner artist with fun craft activities. Our Fall Day of Play is great preparation for future ASF classes and camps. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Pack a lunch for a picnic in the Shakespeare Garden with a special feature performance following all the fun!

Preteen Acting

Exploring Clue
Grades 6 – 8
8 weeks | Mondays, Sept. 16 – Nov. 4 | 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
NO CLASS OCTOBER 14 – Indigenous People’s Day

Fee: $200

Instructor: Sarah Kay Grinstead

Ignite your imagination and explore the mechanics of acting for the stage! This course will be a fun, laughter-filled experience for all. The skills developed in this course will foster greater success in other areas of performance and beyond. As the culmination of all they’ve learned, students will perform a few hilarious scenes from Clue for family, friends, and fans on the final day of class.

More about Clue: In the playful and mysterious world of the classic board game Clue, six colorful characters gather at a spooky mansion for a dinner party that takes an unexpected turn. Filled with twists, clues, and lots of fun, this interactive adventure invites audiences to help crack the case and find out who’s the culprit!

Musical Theatre Dance Combos

InterGenerational – Ages 16+

Musical Theatre Dance Combos is back! Are you ready to tap? Get ready to have a ton of fun and burn a few calories in a low-stakes, movement-based environment! Participants will learn different styles of tap dancing for classic and contemporary musical theatre while boosting confidence and connecting across the ages.

ASF believes the concept of an InterGen class provides a unique opportunity to build community and find value in various life perspectives. This course is appropriate for high school students (ages 16+), working artists, and lifelong learners of all skill levels.

Young Performers

Exploring Charlotte’s Web
Grades 3 – 5
8 weeks | Mondays, Sept. 16 – Nov. 4 | 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.
NO CLASS OCTOBER 14 – Indigenous People’s Day

Fee: $200

Our young performers will be introduced to the joy of theatre making through creative drama games, storytelling, and ensemble-building activities. Meet new friends and learn the basics of voice, movement, collaboration, and performing! These young actors will learn all about Charlotte’s Web and perform a few scenes from the play for family, friends, and fans on the final day of class.

More about Charlotte’s Web: When a young pig named Wilbur faces an uncertain future, a clever and kind spider named Charlotte spins a web of words to save him. This beloved classic by E.B. White is a beautiful story that celebrates the magic of friendship and the bonds that unite us.

Teen Acting

Audition Power!
Grades 9 – 12
4 weeks | Saturdays, Sept. 21 – Oct. 19 | 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Instructors: Cameron Williams and Madeleine Lambert

Get ready to nail your next audition or on-stage performance role! This lightning fast series of workshops will prepare emerging actors for future auditions (local theatre, college admission auditions, and beyond) by exploring improvisation, building believable characters, and choosing material that will BOOK WORK! Students who take this course will develop confidence and voice and movement skills needed for stage work.

The Actor's Toolkit

InterGenerational – Ages 16 +
6 weeks | Mondays, Sept. 16 – Oct. 21 | 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Fee: $125

Instructor: Matt Lytle, assistant director for ASF’s productions of Dear Jack, Dear Louise and A Christmas Carol.

This six-week course will give actors tools to make exciting, engaging, and grounded acting choices using physicality and clues from text. Actors will mine scenes from Shakespeare and classic American plays.

We’re looking for passionate and energetic teaching artists around the River Region and beyond to lead and/or assist with our Education programming — including but not limited to workshops, classes, and camps for youth and adults! Teaching Artists are hired at ASF on a rolling basis throughout the season. Add your information to our databaseto be notified if an opening fits your profile or area of expertise.

Cancellation Policy:

We want all students to be satisfied with their experience at the ASF Academy. If, after completing the first day of class, you decide that you do not want to continue, let us know by the second business day following class, and we will return your payment (minus the $25 registration fee). After the second day of class, no tuition or enrollment adjustments will be made.
